AAWGT: Making a difference in our community!
2016 GRANTEE: YWCA
Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Play Therapy Services
Our AAWGT grant of $10,000 to the YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County for 2016 is for implementation of a Therapeutic Playroom designed to empower and promote healing ofchildren, ages 3-12, who have experienced trauma (domestic violence and sexual assault). The funding will provide 600 sessions in the first year and 3000 sessions over the useful life of the resources secured. This project includes both the outfitting and licensed therapy associated with this type of innovative service aimed at improving the social and emotional functioning of our youngest victims of abuse.
Even though it has only been a few weeks since the room opened for client use, therapists and parents are already reporting success in behavior modification. More time will be spent in the therapeutic playroom in an effort to address self-esteem and child-parent relationships. Several parents have noted, however, that their children are excited to attend therapy in the new space, which helps with the parent child relationship as it eliminates stress and arguments when both enjoy coming for services. More progress will be explained in the next reporting period.
