Women Leading Change at Home and Around the World
“Women Leading Change at Home and Around the World” was the topic for the annual AAWGT Women and Leadership event held on March 8 at Calvary United Methodist Church. Highlighting International Women’s Day, this gathering was extremely successful, with more than 100 attendees including 64 members and 52 guests. A panel discussion among two mother-daughter pairs focused on the influences, motivations, and challenges in their separate journeys, as well as the threads they and other women have in common as they seek to find their place in the world.
The panel of four amazing women included Elizabeth Kinney of Light house Social Enterprise which includes the Light house Bistro in Annapolis, and her daughter, Megan Kinney, a singer-songwriter and community activist in Los Angeles. Megan sang her inspiring song about giving back. Jan Piercy, whose executive experience has included the World Bank, regional banks, the Global Philanthropy Forum, and Board member of the D.C. Homeless Children’s Playtime Project, and her daughter Lissa Piercy, a performance poet and co-founder of a talent agency representing social justice-oriented authors and artists. Lissa performed her poem honoring International Women’s Day.
The panel discussion featured lively exchanges among all four panelists and was moderated by Kitty Higgins, former White House Cabinet Secretary, and Member of the National Transportation Safety Board.
