AAWGT: Over 10 years of making a difference in our community!
2015, 2016 AND 2017 Grantee: H.O.P.e for All
Transitioning Homeless Families
H.O.P.E for All has just opened their brand new 14,000 square foot warehouse, consolidating four smaller locations and office space into one. They have found this a huge improvement, as you will see from the photos.
Some background…In 2004 retired teachers Diane and Leo Zerhusen, inspired by religious convictions to serve their less fortunate neighbors, founded He Opens Paths to Everyone (H.O.P.E For All). Their goal was to provide - free of charge - basic furniture, clean, new bedding, and household supplies to women and children in Anne Arundel County and parts of Baltimore City who were moving from homelessness to subsidized housing. These families are referred by a number of county government agencies and other local non-profits. By meeting these needs, what once seemed like an insurmountable task for a single mom and her kids becomes a tremendous blessing, freeing the family to focus on preparing for work and school.
During H.O.P.E. For All’s first year of operation, 13 families were served. For ten years the effort grew, supported by donations of money and used items from caring individuals and area churches. Amazingly, this organization’s small staff and numerous volunteers were able to serve nearly 250 families in 2015. However, the growing needs of the community have resulted in a rising financial need for H.O.P.E for All. In an effort to broaden their support throughout the county, they published articles in local papers. Because donations could no longer satisfy the growing need, they approached the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County and AAWGT about their decision to purchase furniture items such as beds and dressers, personal items such as new socks and underwear as well as cleaning and hygiene items - which all continue to fly off the shelves.
In addition to the families they have helped, they now serve 2,000 to 3,000 people (mostly children referred by Anne Arundel County Public Schools) who receive clothing from H.O.P.E. every year.
