AAWGT: Over 10 years of making a difference in our community!

2018 Fall Field Trip

Second graders sounding out words. Drummers performing. Elementary school students working on art projects. AAWGT members saw their grant dollars in action on October 30 at the annual Fall Field Trip, where they visited five Start the Adventure in Reading (STAIR) sites and two Creating Communities sites.

At the annual field trip, AAWGT members visit a grantee to learn more about the impact of their grant dollars. The trips provide a first-hand look into philanthropy in Anne Arundel County.

At the STAIR sites, members observed tutoring sessions with second graders from local elementary schools. Students met one-on-one with trained tutors reading books, working on phonics and writing. The tutors’ use of games, plastic letters, dry-erase boards, and crayons made the lessons interesting and kept the students engaged. STAIR representatives at each location met with our members, explaining to them how the program works and answering questions. STAIR is our Momentum Grant recipient for 2018.

At Creating Communities, we saw engaged students and instructors doing exciting art projects at Eastport Community Center via the Tuesday Afternoon Learning Experience (TALE). TALE participants also work on crafts, STEM projects, puzzles, drawing and games. At Georgetown East Elementary School, we observed drumming instruction, a part of the Arts Ambassadors program which teaches world percussion and vocal music.

The Creating Communities program teaches students the relationship of art to other subjects such as mathematics and writing. It received grants from AAWGT in 2012, 2013 and 2017.
