January 2023

Change is Good! Moving Forward with the Times

The new year is the perfect time to take stock and consider what needs to be changed or adapted in AAWGT. Continuous improvement has been part of our DNA since its founding as we’ve continuously evolved to find the best ways to serve women and families in our county. We are hosting a special event on January 11, “What’s New with AAWGT.” The event will highlight what we achieved in 2022 and let you know what we’re planning for 2023. The registration link can be found below.

One thing that’s new and improved for 2023 is this newsletter. It’s been simplified and will be sent out monthly. We hope you will enjoy reading it and touching base with us throughout the year.

Sincerely,

Susan Cook

Grantee Spotlight: Co-Op Arundel

Mentoring Lifts Women out of Poverty

For the second year in a row, AAWGT has provided Co-Op Arundel with a $20,000 grant to support numerous women in our county through their “My Sistah’s Keeper” program. MSK provides women living in low-income and public housing communities with an eight-week program that focuses on issues such as mental health, conflict resolution, financial literacy and goal setting. Participants are paired with a guide who follows them throughout the program and beyond.

They also receive a Chromebook and other resources upon graduating to empower them to achieve their goals. The grant from AAWGT provides program facilitators and many resources and activities for program participants.

Co-Op Arundel, a 501(c)(3) organization, has also undertaken several other initiatives to assist underserved communities in Anne Arundel County in partnership with other county organizations like People Builders Consulting and the City of Annapolis. Some of these have included addressing substance abuse, including faciliting town halls and providing Narcan training and distribution. Learn more about Co-Op Arundel at cooparundel.org.

Our Grants in Action

An example of the impact of our grants comes from 2021 grantee, Annapolis Immigration Justice Network. Theyhelped a young woman, Jeymy, who through the AAWGT grant was able to get a work permit, which will lead to eventual Legal Permanent Residency (green card) and U.S. citizenship.
