Trimming Health Inequality: Barbershops and Beauty Salons as Trusted Partners

Barbershops and beauty salons have long been trusted gathering spaces. Dr. Stephen Thomas and the Health Advocates In-Reach & Research (H.A.I.R.) Program use the strength of this trusted relationship to bring critical health screenings and information out into the community. Research and experimentation are proving this method of outreach and education is working.

Most AAWGT events are open to all who are interested, and members are encouraged to bring friends and prospective members.

Exceptions are the meetings related to the business of the organization. These will be noted as “Members Only.”

  • No upcoming events

Each year, AAWGT holds:

  • 3 education meetings (February June and October; open to all)
  • An Annual  Women and Leadership Forum (March; open to all)
  • A Spring Open House for members and prospective members (April; open to all)
  • A Fall Grants Showcase featuring current grantees’ accomplishments and introduction of new grantees (September; open to all)
  • A Fall Field Trip to one of our grantees
  • An Annual Grant Voting Meeting where members select grant recipients for the upcoming year (May)
  • An Annual Business Meeting where members discuss a variety of topics and select new leadership for the upcoming year (November)
  • 4 Getting Together events where members meet to socialize and network
  • Plus, our Book Club meets 6 times a year, including a movie night
