Asbury Church Assistance Network (ACAN) More Than a Pantry: ACAN Brings Food, Dignity, and Daily Essentials to Anne Arundel Families Two-year AAWGT grantee ACAN, Inc. (Asbury Church Assistance Network) serves as a “one-stop” community resource where residents access healthy foods and tools to enhance overall well-being. Established in 2004 as a church-based outreach ministry, ACAN has grown into a major community resource, with AAWGT grants, serving nearly 90,000 people in the past two years, enhancing nutrition and providing critical household goods and support to vulnerable families in AAC. Click HERE to read more.At its core, ACAN’s mission is to make healthy food choices and basic necessities accessible to households experiencing hardship. The organization focuses on improving quality of life by addressing hunger, nutrition, and essential needs rather than providing direct financial assistance. ACAN provides a range of services beyond a traditional pantry model. Clients typically receive food boxes containing dried goods, canned foods, fresh produce, dairy, and protein items, depending on availability. Additional support includes personal hygiene products, a baby pantry supplying diapers and infant essentials, and home delivery services for seniors, individuals with disabilities, and homebound residents. These offerings position ACAN as a comprehensive support hub for vulnerable households. Through volunteer engagement, partnerships with grocery stores and community organizations, and special initiatives such as food drives and seasonal giveaways, ACAN works to build a stronger, healthier community while addressing immediate hunger needs. Located in Severna Park, Maryland, ACAN operates food distribution five days per week, including service to several senior centers throughout the area. The organization relies heavily on donations, volunteers, and community partnerships to sustain its impact and extend its reach to vulnerable populations. By combining compassionate service with a focus on nutrition and dignity, ACAN plays a vital role in strengthening food security and supporting families across the region. March Celebrates Women’s History Month Women’s History Month is an annual month dedicated to women’s achievements and accomplishments in history and society. It began as “Women’s History Week,” in 1978, and after years of lobbying by pro-women’s groups, in 1987 a month dedicated to women’s achievements finally received official recognition when President Reagan signed it into law. From 1988 to the present, annual congressional resolutions and presidential proclamations have continued to recognize March as Women’s History Month. Leadership, Governance, & Nominating
If You Can Serve, We Want You!! At a recent visit to the Getty Center in LA, a special exhibit of black photography featured a photo of Fannie Lou Hamer. She was a civil right activist who organized voter registration drives in the south, and in 2025 was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In her words… “It’s one thing I don’t want you to say tonight… I don’t want to hear you say ‘Honey, I’m behind you.’ Well, move, and I don’t want you back there. Because you could be two hundred miles behind. I want you to say, ‘I’m with you.’ and we’ll go up this freedom road together.” The Leadership, Governance, & Nominating is actively looking for passionate leaders to join our committees, committee chair positions, and executive team.
